Maldives says it's OK to rape 12 yr old girls post-puberty?!!

I skim through Maldivian news now and then and try sink in the madness going about these days but none, absolutely none, has left me as unsettled and enraged as the news regarding the recent ruling on the case of a 12 year old girl being sexually assaulted by a group of 4 axe-wielding men.

I just cannot imagine how a sane, responsible individual tasked with enforcing law, protecting the weak and upholding moral values in the capacity of a judge arrives at the conclusion: (that) a TWELVE YEAR OLD girl had CONSENSUAL sex with FOUR MEN who BROKE into her room by BREAKING a window with an AXE and proceeding to help themselves to the orifices on a helpless girl most probably scared shitless towards being deaf, mute and dumb and thus conclude that the men were INNOCENT of rape. What is perhaps even more frustrating is that the reasons cited for the ruling are pure nonsense that’d drive any rational, sensible person to the edges of sanity. One of the more disturbing reasons stated by the judge is that the girl had reached puberty - a statement that carries implicit consequences that she is to be considered adult and thus responsible for what happens. This argument, which supposedly is drawn from Islamic Sharia, declares a girl as adult when she reaches puberty irrespective of her age. The other reasons stated by the judge are no less fallacious – all of them more or less state that the girl did not object at any time during or after the event. Fortunately though, rape and abuse have been pretty well studied (elsewhere in the more educated, civilised world) and there are well documented typical reactions as shock, denial and shame that explain and may well be the real reason behind the girl’s actions.

What more, I found the english version of the (original) dhivehi news at Haveeru what seems to be an intentional deception in that it carefully avoided mentioning the details of the event - is this a purely a conspiracy conjecture or is this a just accusation? This is particularly worrying after all Haveeru claims honest reporting these days. The report at Minivan News fared better I guess...

Anyway, this ruling marks another sad day in our history... and life goes on.

Yep. It was unfair. Total injustice.

If only we have Islamic Shariah in Maldives; those four would be dead by now. But wait a minute - Islamic laws are so barbaric and 1400 years old. They don't fit in our "civilised" world.

So we should consider the "human rights" of the rapists and "deal" with them as the Americans do. Who gives a damn about the 12 year girl who was raped? She'll grow out of it. Who gives a damn?

That's exactly what has happened - the rapists were dealt in a "civilised" way. So I don't understand why a lot of people are concerned about it.

Not only you Jaa. This has really disturbed me too.I am angry and furious.Sad in the mean time. Everyone seems to be more interested in playing politics these days. The children are getting neglected so badly, especially the vulnerable.

If this happened to a rich family or well known family, probably the whole news and the peoples pictures who did this will be up on the TV and it will be the news of the country.

I again ask. Where are the societies registered to protect the children? Where is the gender minister?

This is ridiculous. Utterly disgusting act my the judge. Corruption among judges is rampant.

This incident brought back memories of a story told to me. Once a very experienced person in the field of psychiatry told me a real story of a lesbian girl who was gang raped in a similar manner and fashion. She committed suicide days later. No wonder the suicide rate is so high in Maldives.. Girls are living in shame ... no respect .. no integrity for them in Maldives..

Out of the topic, but the recent death of the baby who dies because of negligence in the ADK. Another incident where the cutter fight that happened recently. Oe of the victim was taken to a hospital and the sign on the station said "gone to ward.. please wait" .. And a blleding man has to stay on trolley bed without getting the much needed medical attention.

No authority to investigate these things. No Ombudsman to take these issues to. No laws. No nothing..

It looks like ...If you have money you can buy votes.. If you have money you can get away with rape...

YEs.. i heard that the judge was offered a huge lump sum of money to change it in favour of the rapists.. with religion at hand the judge used it to the fullest and the filthiest in way.

There are also a lot of child abusers in these islands where few people lives and there is no much security for them.
Wonder how many children would be silent and shocked when such an incident happens to them and who would ever know about it unless they tell it.

This is only a single case but probably a lot of children must have already been abused and some of these children's life's already ruined cause of the (psychological) deep shock.
So whose gonna take the responsibility and what can be done to stop it?

  6. MrMv says:

I share ur anger jaa. Its purely unfair. Its injustice. These rapists arent got any religion values in their heart. Sickos..
Narakaige vaahaka nudakaasey, kuda kudin nafsaany gothun gellunvaaney, kavvalhuge azaabge vaahaka nudakaashhey, blah blah is the motto of current govt now.
Thus, without informative sermons and islamic knowledge to the mass, aqeeda in heart wont be built. Hate those rapists.

  9. HappyPappy says:

Abulbarakaath- shame isnt it? after all, we do understand AbulBarakaathul Barbary tried really hard to save the King from his pedophilic tendencies- and we're still where we started, if not worse.

well, watcha gonna do- it happens when you can become a good citizen of the country by following a religion that condones it's prophet popping 12-year olds' cherries.

  10. Ahmed says:

Stop child abuse. I know its pain, every inch. I was abused by a man at the age of 5 and now I am attracted to guys! I don't want such a life. Yet it creeps upon me till today. So am I supposed to be a happy gay??? No. I disgust myself. Stop child abuse in every manner you can, individually and in organised manner. I am also doing my bit, but it isn't enough for this damned country!

  11. wail says:
