Using 4GB SDHC Cards with the TI PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller based card readers

I recently bought a 4GB microSDHC card and had serious trouble reading the card using my laptop's built-in card reader under Windows Vista w/ SP1. The card reader had been able to read other cards of less capacity, including a 1GB card, just fine. Looking around on the web made it apparent that a LOT of people had the same issue when attempting to read cards above 2GB. It took a lot of reading through various forum posts on the subject before I finally got it working with the 4GB card.

The built-in card reader in my Acer Aspire 5673WLMi uses the Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller, which is a device found on a lot of laptops of various different models and brands. The latest driver version for the device currently issued by Acer, and most other manufacturers, is versioned 2.0.0.6. The two main solutions proposed on the forums is 1) an install/upgrade of the existing driver manually without using the installer software, and 2) registry hacks that supposedly fix the problem. Neither of these worked for me, though the forums postings indicate these "fixes" worked for many people.

I spent the better part of a day reading and checking various proposed fixes and, in the end, all it took was for the recent version 2.0.0.7B driver found on the HP Customer Care website to be installed...

Anyway, I thought I'd reiterate the solution in case it helps someone else...

Thanks again.

Thanks for the tip. Works like a charm on my Acer 9410.
Funny that Acer doesn't provide the driver and HP does.
Didn't even require a reboot of my laptop.

Works pefectly on my Gateway MT6839b laptop. Now i can read my 4GB SDHC without having to connect an external reader.

Tried it out on my Gateway C-140X convertible tablet running Windows 7 Beta 1. Reads a Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 6 like a charm. Will try it on the XP Professional that's dual booted on this system as well. Thanks for the tip!

PS - for any of you who are wondering, the exact chip that's in this system is the TI PCI-7412. Available on the Gateway support page under "motherboard", click specifications.

  13. Jeremiah says:

Skriff, thanks much for posting that you tried this successfully on your Gateway C-140X.

That gave me the confidence to try it on *my* Gateway C-140X. I simply clicked the driver download link at HP's site (link to HP's site in the original post) and selected Run, then followed the prompts to install the driver.

It took a little longer than I thought, and with more prompts and waiting than I thought it might. But I just let the installer do its thing, clicking when prompted, and it installed fine (ended with a successful install message).

Before installing this driver, my laptop was not recognizing my SanDisk 4 GB micro SDHC card at all. Now it recognizes it perfectly.

    Thanks!

Thank you from Japan. This tip works for SDHC cards perfectly on my gateway tablet but there is one thing. The reader no longer works for my old 1GB SD card. Luckily I do have an old USB based card reader that still works for old 1GB SD card. The situation is still a little bit cumbersome but better than nothing. :-) Thank you anyway.

I have an Acer Aspire 9410-4933 (bought in the USA, running Vista). I couldn't get my SanDisk Extreme III 4GB SDHC card to be recognized using the driver that came installed with the system (version 2.0.0.6). I found a pointer to the following (yes, the URL says it's for Extensa 5220 and I am using Aspire 9410-4933) and installed that and now the SDHC card is working just fine.

I've been wanting to fix this for sometime. I have an HP dv5000 and an 8GB micro SD that is not recognized. Downloaded the linked drivers from HP - the setup program says it's for Vista even though it contains XP drivers - and it installs without fuss but then the reader can't detect anything at all. So still looking for something for XP. The driver I just tried was 2.0.0.7B - the driver I have that works with anything up to 2GB is version 2.0.0.2 - I'd be interested in trying other version. Of course no problems whatsoever in Linux.

  22. florit says:

did you find a linux firmware for this device?

  23. Jon Wright says:

Success. I found a version 2.0.0.8 on versiontracker.com via techrepublic and that works - I can read my 8GB on WinXP.

  24. Didier E. says:

Hi all, for your information I found version 2.0.0.8 on ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/extensa_5220/vista/Drivers_SP1/CardReader_TI_v2.0.0.8_Vistax64x32_GECRF006.zip

This works for XP without problem and I can read my SDHC cards as well as SD cards (version 2.0.0.7 read SDHC only on my ferrari 5005, SD were not readable)

  25. DD Orlandi says:

THANK YOU DIDIER!!!! I can now read both formats. YAY
